The Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing provides a postmaster's Certificate in Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (FPMHNP) designed for nurses holding a master's in Nursing who wish to enroll in existing courses from the Master of Science in Nursing program. The FPMHNP curriculum equips nurses for diverse roles, such as independent psychotherapy practice and treating psychiatric and mental health conditions across various healthcare environments, including prescribing psychiatric medications. Participants benefit from intensive case supervision to integrate mental health science theory into clinical practice. Rooted in the longstanding tradition of Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, the program incorporates coursework in nursing research, theoretical frameworks, and patient care across the full spectrum of health and illness. Admission requirements vary depending on whether students enter with a Nurse Practitioner-certified master's degree or other nursing graduate degrees. Upon finishing the program, non-Nurse Practitioner graduates completing an NP certificate become eligible to apply for California state certification, while all certificate completers may take their specialty's national NP certification exam.
