The Master of Arts in Philosophy attracts students from diverse backgrounds with various aspirations, such as pursuing advanced philosophy studies, teaching at community colleges, or personal intellectual growth. While the program maintains an analytical focus, it also promotes exploration of other philosophical domains, including Asian philosophy, feminist perspectives, and the convergence of European and Anglo-American philosophical traditions. The degree requires completion of 30 units, with a minimum of 15 units at the 5000-level. At least 24 units must be philosophy courses, while non-philosophy electives should align with the student's academic objectives.

Qualification Requirements

In addition to University requirements for admission to graduate study the Philosophy Department requires a 2.75 grade point average in the last 60 semester or 90 quarter units, official transcripts, and a writing sample (either a statement of purpose or a philosophy paper). Applicants must possess a baccalaureate in philosophy or a baccalaureate with a major in a field other than philosophy supplemented by the equivalent of a minor in philosophy.
