The Japanese studies program offers both a major and minor for the Bachelor of Arts degree. It focuses on building practical communication abilities in Japanese while providing comprehensive exploration of Japanese literature, language, and culture. Developing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural understanding allows students to engage directly with Japanese society and gain deeper insight into contemporary Japan. Examining Japanese literature, language, and civilization expands intellectual perspectives, cultivates respect for cultural differences, and prepares students to become global citizens in the 21st century. The BA in Japanese requires 120 total units, with 43 units dedicated to the major. Students should meet with an advisor to determine the exact unit requirements for general education and elective courses.
