The biological sciences encompass all scientific fields focused on understanding the essence of life. This broad discipline spans genetics, genomics, physiology, cell biology, marine biology, ecology, and animal behavior, among others. Within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Department of Biological Sciences provides five degree programs: a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, a Master of Science in Biology, and a Master of Science in Microbiology. The B.S. in Biology includes a general track along with three specialized concentrations: Biology Education, Zoology, Botany & Ecology, and Molecular Cell Biology and Physiology. Detailed requirements for each degree and specialization are outlined below. The department also collaborates with the Desert Studies Consortium and the Ocean Studies Institute, with the latter's details available in the catalog under Ocean Studies Institute. The Molecular Cell Biology and Physiology track is tailored for students pursuing careers or advanced studies in cellular, molecular, and organ system biology, making it ideal for those aiming for health professions like medicine or physical therapy. Students in this track may also consider the Biotechnology Certificate program described elsewhere in the Catalog. This specialization requires about 77-80 major units, including 44-47 lower-division and 32-33 upper-division courses.
All students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in: 1. their overall college record, 2. all coursework completed at CSULB, and 3. all major-specific courses. Additionally, a grade of C or higher is mandatory for all upper-division major courses.
