The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts program equips students with versatile skills across various dramatic arts disciplines. The coursework covers both classical and modern subjects such as Acting, Design and Technical Production, Theatre History, Dramatic Literature and Analysis, Directing, and Playwriting.
The Theatre Arts Department provides three Bachelor of Arts pathways: a General degree track, plus specialized options in Performance (acting) and Technical Theatre (set/costume/lighting design). Graduate students can pursue Master of Fine Arts degrees. Applicants should review both the university's general requirements in this Catalog and the department's specific guidelines detailed in the Department Program Planners, available by request.CSULB holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). The Theatre Arts Department maintains active memberships with the Theatre Communications Group, United States Institute of Theatre Technology, University/Resident Theatre Association, and International Theatre Institute of the United States.All theatre majors must contribute to department productions. Acting students enrolled in performance courses must audition for and participate in that semester's productions, accepting any assigned roles. Students should consult their advisor before joining external theatre programs.The W. David Sievers Memorial Acting Scholarship honors the program's founding faculty member, awarded annually to promising performance students through competitive faculty-judged auditions. Additional financial support comes from the Fine Arts Affiliates and Dramatic Allied Arts Guild of Long Beach for outstanding students across all theatre disciplines.
