The Spanish Bachelor of Arts program requires 39 upper-division credits from 300-400 level courses listed below. The lower-division credit requirement varies based on prior Spanish education in high school or college; heritage speakers should review the prerequisite section.
We strongly recommend participating in study abroad opportunities through CSU International Programs, with options in Santiago (Chile), Querétaro (Mexico), or Granada, Jaén, and Madrid (Spain), as well as semester programs in Madrid, Alicante, or Salamanca (Spain). Consult with your academic advisor for personalized guidance.
Earning a Spanish major fulfills the subject matter requirement for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Spanish. Future educators should meet with both the undergraduate Spanish Advisor and Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Program Advisor during early program planning. The Department particularly recommends learning an additional language for students pursuing teaching credentials.
Over 41 million U.S. residents speak Spanish, with the Hispanic population projected to reach 119 million by 2060 according to the US Census Bureau. Our Spanish Program provides diverse courses in language, literature, culture, linguistics, and translation, along with numerous study abroad opportunities in Spanish-speaking countries. Program offerings include a Certificate in Professional and Conversational Competence for Spanish Heritage Speakers, a Spanish Minor, Bachelor of Arts with an Interdisciplinary Studies option, and Master of Arts degrees in Spanish. We also provide a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Spanish, with flexible completion options that can be tailored throughout a student's academic journey at CSULB.
