The Creative Writing program caters to students passionate about crafting and analyzing fiction, poetry, plays, or screenplays. Exploring both classic and contemporary literature proves invaluable for those aiming to hone their creative writing skills for professional publication. (Aspiring secondary educators should pursue the Creative Writing focus within the English Education program.)
Detailed program guides for each specialization can be found on the Department website or obtained from the Department office. English majors should meet with faculty advisors when selecting their program and maintain regular consultations throughout their academic journey. The English Department maintains a list of faculty advisors available for guidance. Faculty office hours are displayed near the Department office, with informational materials indicating which professors specialize in advising for particular programs. Note that ENGL 100B, a general education requirement, doesn't count toward any English specialization. Certain programs may incorporate approved courses from other departments, and with advisor approval, students may include additional non-English courses. Since many courses fulfill requirements across multiple programs, students can often switch specializations without losing substantial credit toward degree completion. Many students also choose to pursue dual specializations within the English Department.
