The Master of Social Work stands as Orange County's sole public university program. It delivers both foundational and advanced coursework focused on direct service methods through a multicultural lens. This framework equips students with core social work competencies for diverse populations, along with leadership skills for public, nonprofit, and voluntary agencies. Graduates qualify for professional roles across multiple sectors such as mental health (including psychotherapy), child welfare, geriatric services, medical social work (in hospitals or dialysis centers), educational settings, criminal justice (as therapists or mediators), addiction treatment, community development, and social service administration. The program specifically prepares graduates for these career paths. Overall, the M.S.W. develops professionals capable of improving social dynamics for individuals, families, groups, and communities. Students can specialize in three key areas: Gerontology, Child Welfare, or Community Mental Health. This degree serves as a California licensing requirement for becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Coursework covers human development theory, social policy, and research methods, with strong emphasis on practical application - a hallmark of this hands-on profession. The program requires 1,050 fieldwork hours at social service agencies, where students develop client interaction skills alongside practice-based coursework and seminars.
