The Master of Music program provides two specialization options: theory/composition and performance. This degree aims to develop graduates who: possess expert-level understanding of music history, literature, and theory; demonstrate advanced, thoughtful, and autonomous musical practice through performance/improvisation, composition, and analysis at a pre-professional standard; exhibit readiness to enter their profession with exceptional expertise and abilities; maintain scholarly professionalism in both written and verbal communication through research papers and presentations; show leadership in academic and performance collaborations; pursue innovative creative approaches in programming; and incorporate worldwide viewpoints and contemporary developments into their musical practice, composition, teaching, and career growth.
Cal State Fullerton's Wind, Percussion & Brass Program delivers a dynamic and diverse educational experience. Students engage with everything from symphonic winds to orchestras, jazz bands to chamber groups, gaining comprehensive repertoire knowledge and performance abilities essential for modern musicians. The program's ensembles - including the University Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and University Band - focus on artistic excellence while preserving an important American cultural legacy. These groups perform works by renowned composers like Sousa, Gershwin, Bernstein, Ives, and Copland. Through this musical exploration, students cultivate appreciation for contemporary works while upholding Cal State Fullerton's distinguished wind performance tradition and the rich heritage of American concert bands.
