This concentration in Social, Moral, and Legal Philosophy for the Professions equips students for advanced professional studies and future careers in their selected fields. Those who complete this program while earning a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy will develop essential intellectual abilities—such as critical reading and analytical skills—needed to successfully pursue competitive graduate programs in law, business, and administration. Philosophy originated when individuals began questioning traditional explanations about the world's structure and human existence provided by poets and priests. Over time, philosophers have played a key role in shaping and examining nearly every facet of culture, including science, religion, art, and politics. Studying philosophy thus represents a foundational liberal arts education that deliberately cultivates reasoning and conceptual analysis. The discipline encompasses: (1) refining critical thinking and writing abilities, (2) examining conceptual challenges that arise when reflecting on experience, (3) evaluating assumptions in other academic disciplines, and (4) exploring political and ethical theories. Philosophy is not a high-unit major, allowing many students to gain its educational advantages while pursuing another discipline. The Philosophy Department also supports customizable minors that align with individual interests or complementary fields. Pursuing a philosophy major or minor provides strong preparation for law school and other careers requiring reasoning, analysis, and information processing skills.
