The Master of Science in Biology program at Fresno State is a research-focused graduate degree designed to help students achieve academic excellence while building a strong foundation in original research. Our Biology Department is widely recognized across campus for its high-caliber programs, and we take pride in educating future scientists who will make meaningful contributions through both teaching and research. Earning an MS in Biology equips graduates for success in educational careers (such as secondary school or community college teaching), industry roles, or advanced studies toward a Ph.D. or professional degree.

The graduate program's curriculum mirrors the diverse specializations of our Biology faculty, allowing Master's students to tailor their studies while gaining broad exposure to multiple biological disciplines. Advanced coursework not only deepens subject expertise but also develops essential scientific competencies, including mastery of contemporary methodologies, analytical reasoning, and effective scientific communication through writing and presentations.

In our Master's program, students choose a thesis advisor aligned with their research interests. The resulting thesis project reflects each student's individual scientific inquiry, developed with guidance from both their primary advisor and thesis committee.

Graduates with an M.S. in Biology are well-prepared for various career paths in the life sciences, from pursuing doctoral studies to entering professional fields. This biological training opens doors to positions across multiple sectors including government agencies, private industry, and educational institutions. Potential career specializations encompass laboratory supervision, quality assurance, environmental conservation, biotech research, healthcare investigation, ecological studies, agricultural sciences, pest management, and marine biology, among others.
