Every MCJ student must choose a specialization area, known as an option, within their major. Available options include advertising and public relations, broadcast and multiplatform journalism, digital journalism, and film and media arts. Detailed course requirements for each specialization can be found in the Major Requirements section.
For nearly a century since 1928, the Media, Communications and Journalism Department has equipped countless students for careers in media. Our curriculum spans advertising, broadcast journalism, film studies, photography, digital journalism, public relations, and video production.
We educate students about the significance of media, communications, and journalism, emphasizing ethical and responsible practices in these fields. By combining theoretical knowledge, professional skills, and practical experience, we develop critical thinkers and effective communicators who excel in dynamic professional landscapes.
The Media, Communications and Journalism program aspires to national leadership by crafting immersive student experiences. We cultivate excellence through intentional practice, comprehensive feedback systems, and reflective learning, all while prioritizing community involvement that enriches society. Have graduated from high school (earning a high school diploma), have earned a Certificate of General Education Development (GED) or have passed the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE)
English language Score: TOEFL – 61 iBT, or IELTS – 6.0 or with 5.5 Band score in each section, or ELS Language Centers - Level 112, or Pearson's Test of English – 45. Application Deadlines: Fall - July 1 and Spring - November 1.
