In today's increasingly mobile society, traveling to regions where English isn't the primary language happens in an instant. Whether visiting or working abroad, you'll soon discover how misleading the notion of a monolingual world truly is. Even in California, it's rare to spend a day without encountering conversations in diverse languages, reflecting America's rich tapestry of heritage tongues. Being bilingual and bicultural enhances cultural awareness, whether you're exploring foreign lands or remaining stateside. Professionals in agriculture, healthcare, and the arts particularly gain from multilingual abilities. Cultural and linguistic acquisition has no expiration date.

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures champions multicultural and multilingual development in the Central Valley. We equip students with communication skills in key regional heritage languages: German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese—languages that also serve as vital connectors throughout Mexico, Central/South America, and the European Union, facilitating international travel and work. Our curriculum additionally encompasses Greek, Latin, Classical Studies, and Humanities.
