Students create artistic works spanning diverse visual styles, including figurative, abstract, mixed-media, conceptual, and installation pieces, while deepening their knowledge of art history from ancient times to the modern era and contemporary art theory. Through varied approaches to artistic practice, historical study, and theoretical exploration, the studio art major fosters creative problem-solving and analytical skills while equipping students for professional artistic careers.
The Department of Art, Design & Art History cultivates technical abilities, conceptual understanding, humanistic principles, and cultural literacy that serve as the cornerstone of visual arts education. Our department delivers programs in both fine and applied arts that stimulate intellectual curiosity and creative exploration. These initiatives equip students to become practicing artists, art scholars, designers, educators, and culturally engaged members of local and global communities.
Consistent with the university and College of Arts and Humanities's guiding principles, the Department of Art, Design & Art History commits to fostering continuous learning by implementing dynamic, targeted approaches that promote accessibility and achievement for our diverse student population. Partnering with community organizations, we deliver an impactful educational journey that readies students to contribute and lead in the Central Valley, throughout California, and internationally. Our curriculum is designed to impart both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for success in Art and Design professions. We continuously improve instruction and learning through proven methodologies, creative program development, and transformative educational experiences.
Have graduated from high school (earning a high school diploma), have earned a Certificate of General Education Development (GED) or have passed the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE)
English language Score: TOEFL – 61 iBT, or IELTS – 6.0 or with 5.5 Band score in each section, or ELS Language Centers - Level 112, or Pearson's Test of English – 45. Application Deadlines: Fall - July 1 and Spring - November 1.
