The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences provides graduate education culminating in a Master of Science degree in Environmental Geosciences, concentrating on surface geology, seismic risks and regional tectonics, along with water and soil analysis and restoration.
This curriculum equips students for:
careers as geologists and environmental specialists in public agencies (local, state, and national governments) and private sector companies (environmental consultancies, engineering firms, resource extraction corporations, etc.),
meeting certification standards for professional practice,
advanced research in earth sciences including environmental studies, geochemistry, and geophysics, and
teaching positions at community colleges
The department also offers professional development opportunities for working geologists, engineers, urban planners, and related fields.
Our graduate program stands out in the Bay Area with evening course offerings complemented by hands-on fieldwork. Specialized seminars cover varied topics such as groundwater chemistry changes, geological process indicators, landscape evolution, seismic risks, regional geology, shallow geophysics, and contemporary sedimentary systems. We collaborate closely with East Bay Regional Parks, CalEPA, Lawrence Livermore Lab, NASA Ames, the USGS Menlo Park office, and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
