The Department offers some of Cal State East Bay's most rapidly expanding degree programs. Public Health and Health Sciences majors are passionate about enhancing community well-being across California, training for diverse careers in public health, health policy, legal fields, health education, program development, community health initiatives, behavioral health services, occupational safety, and beyond.
These programs examine population health through lenses of equity and social justice, investigating how changing physical, social, and political landscapes impact wellness. Students engage in critical analysis of health concepts across multiple viewpoints while examining cultural influences on health perceptions.
Problem-based learning forms the foundation of the Department's educational philosophy, fostering essential skills in analytical reasoning, collaborative work, and innovative solution development.
The flexible BS in Health Sciences accommodates students pursuing clinical professions (including medicine, law, nursing, physician assistant roles, or allied health fields), those seeking broad health knowledge, or individuals crafting customized study plans with faculty guidance.
Students may specialize in Health Policy - an increasingly vital discipline recognizing that cross-sector cooperation is essential for tackling complex health challenges. This concentration emphasizes data-driven approaches to improving public health systems, policies, and operational frameworks, aligning with the growing "health in all policies" movement adopted by organizations addressing health disparities.
