Geography examines spatial patterns, interactions, and dynamics within human-environment systems. It investigates how people, as physical, social, cultural, and economic forces, shape both natural and constructed landscapes throughout history and in modern times. The Geography curriculum enables students to analyze Earth's diverse physical and human landscapes, their transformations through natural processes or human intervention, and the long-term viability of current practices considering urbanization, globalization, and climate change trends.
Cal State East Bay's Geography BS program offers three specialized tracks alongside core requirements: Resources and Sustainability, Regions and Culture, and Spatial Techniques. These concentrations allow students to seamlessly combine their studies with additional majors, minors, or certificates in fields like Environmental Studies, International Studies, Sustainability, or Cartography and GIS, while also facilitating study abroad opportunities. The Geography BS delivers a comprehensive, multi-faceted education crucial in our era of global interconnectedness and environmental transformation - what researchers call the Anthropocene. Graduates are prepared for diverse careers or advanced studies in environmental management, urban planning, sustainable development, and geospatial analysis. The 43-47 unit program includes 18 lower-division and 25-29 upper-division credits, with the foundational coursework aligning with California Community College's Geography transfer degree requirements.
