The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry delivers comprehensive training in chemical sciences, equipping students to excel in modern society. Our programs enhance analytical reasoning and problem-solving abilities across all disciplines. Non-science majors gain insight into chemical processes affecting daily life, from environmental concerns to health and energy matters. Science students master core chemical principles governing molecular interactions. Chemistry majors develop specialized skills in anticipating chemical reactions, supported by foundational knowledge in mathematics and physics across key chemistry fields: inorganic, analytical, organic, physical, and biochemistry. All students learn proper chemical handling procedures. Emphasizing discovery's role in shaping capable scientists, we actively promote undergraduate research and cooperative learning experiences.
Our undergraduate offerings include: Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry (with Bioanalytical/Forensics and Education concentrations), Bachelor of Arts degrees in both fields (including Education tracks), plus a Chemistry Minor. Detailed program requirements appear in respective degree listings. Graduate studies feature an M.S. in Chemistry with a Biochemistry specialization.
The Chemistry B.S. program holds American Chemical Society (ACS) accreditation, signifying completion of an exceptionally rigorous curriculum. This prestigious certification demonstrates academic excellence to employers and graduate institutions alike, offering graduates a competitive professional advantage.
