The social work field is dedicated to supporting marginalized groups and championing policies that advance fairness and equality. The Social Work Department provides a Master of Social Work (MSW) program designed to equip students for high-level generalist practice. Alumni gain expertise to assist clients across various settings, including mental healthcare, physical wellness, child and family services, aging populations, criminal justice systems, youth programs, and addiction recovery. This curriculum includes 60 credit hours of coursework, a 960-hour field placement, and a final capstone project.
The curriculum features both foundational and specialized courses, helping students cultivate the competencies and principles essential for advanced generalist social work. Learners can choose full-time or part-time enrollment. Those holding a recent BSW from an accredited institution may qualify for advanced standing.
CSU Bakersfield's Social Work Department aims to develop practitioners and leaders skilled in advanced generalist methods. Alumni demonstrate the expertise, ethical grounding, and abilities needed to effectively serve diverse populations while employing evidence-based approaches. The department focuses on enhancing Central Valley communities through culturally aware services, equitable solutions, and ongoing professional development.
