CSUB's Master of Science in Counseling Psychology is a three-year, 60-unit program that prepares graduates to address the growing demand for skilled, ethical mental health practitioners. The curriculum fulfills California BBS academic standards under BPC Section 4980.36 for LMFT licensure and Section 4999.33 for LPCC certification. This comprehensive program equips students with versatile skills for various professional environments, with special emphasis on therapeutic techniques and client relationships. Graduates will master these core principles:
Effective counseling requires specialized techniques that enhance therapeutic progress,
The client-counselor relationship forms the foundation of successful treatment,
Practitioners must skillfully combine knowledge, abilities, and personal experience to foster client growth,
Client behavior stems from complex interactions between personal, family, and cultural factors, and
Professional development in counseling represents an ongoing journey that starts during graduate studies and continues throughout one's career.
To be eligible for admission, the student must fulfill the following minimum requirements:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. (Students with an international degree must have U.S. equivalency determined.)
A 3.2 GPA over the most recent 60 semester or 90 quarter units.
Completion of all prerequisite courses with a grade of at least a “B-” (grading scale 2.7/4.0); (note that prerequisite courses must have been completed within five calendar years of intended admission date). Prerequisite courses:
Introductory statistics
Abnormal psychology
A developmental psychology course (i.e., child psychology, human growth and development, or lifespan development).
Three additional psychology electives
Language proficiency:
TOEFL: Score of 79 iBT required
IELTS: Score of 6.5 required.
Duolingo English Test: Minimum score of 105.
Pearson Test Examination (PTE): Minimum score of 58.
