The Philosophy program empowers students to critically analyze diverse belief and value systems, reflect on the roots of their own convictions, cultivate analytical thinking and communication skills, and apply these abilities to practical challenges.
Derived from the Greek terms philo (love) and sophia (wisdom), Philosophy fundamentally means the pursuit of wisdom. Philosophical studies systematically investigate and structure perspectives on the fundamental concepts shaping thought, action, and existence.
California State University Bakersfield's Philosophy Program provides both a Bachelor of Arts major and minor option. Philosophy majors can specialize in one of three concentrations: Ethics & Moral Reasoning; Law, Justice, & Social Policy; or Mind & World.
At CSU Bakersfield, Philosophy students gain comprehensive knowledge of philosophical traditions while honing logical reasoning abilities. The curriculum features diverse courses like Metaphysics, Ethics, Existentialism, Epistemology, Political Philosophy, and more, equipping students with thorough philosophical training and transferable skills for future success.
