The Philosophy program empowers students to critically analyze diverse belief and value systems, reflect on the roots of their own convictions, cultivate analytical thinking and communication skills, and apply these abilities to contemporary challenges.
Derived from the Greek terms "philo" (love) and "sophia" (wisdom), Philosophy represents the pursuit of wisdom. This discipline systematically investigates and structures perspectives on the fundamental principles shaping thought, action, and existence.
California State University Bakersfield's Philosophy Program provides both a Bachelor of Arts major and minor option. Philosophy majors can specialize in one of three concentrations: Ethics & Moral Reasoning; Law, Justice & Social Policy; or Mind & World.
