History examines our past, going beyond simple facts to explore patterns, evolving perspectives, and transformations in societies and cultures. This discipline enables us to comprehend our present identity and illuminates the dynamics between nations and communities. At its core, history aims to interpret how things change. While current events don't simply repeat the past, they emerge from historical contexts—beliefs, tensions, and circumstances shaped by earlier times. Ignoring these historical foundations can lead to troubling consequences.
To help learners recognize these connections, our History Department provides diverse courses covering U.S., European, Asian, and Latin American studies.
The History/SSSE major pathway equips students for fifth-year credential programs in Single Subject Secondary Education. This specialized track combines a History major with foundational studies in Economics, Geography, Political Science, and Sociology—essential preparation for teaching Social Science in California and passing the CSET exams.
The ability to think critically, analyze deeply, and write effectively—skills cultivated in our History program—are valuable across professions, from academia to business. These competencies form the cornerstone of our department's approach. Graduates gain versatile knowledge applicable to numerous fields. A history degree isn't just for aspiring historians or educators; it leads to opportunities in publishing, archival work, advisory roles, and beyond.
