The Department of Critical Race, Gender & Sexuality Studies (CRGS) brings together students, faculty, and staff in an inclusive environment dedicated to examining power structures and fostering social justice. By integrating Ethnic Studies, Women's Studies, and Multicultural Queer Studies, CRGS provides a distinctive academic approach that recognizes how different forms of oppression interconnect and reinforce one another (Matsuda).
Our recently introduced CRGS major explores the complex relationships between race, gender, sexuality, nationality, class, and physical ability. Central to this program is investigating systems of privilege and oppression, power dynamics, and various forms of resistance. We address pressing social concerns through multiple perspectives, examining individual identity alongside community dynamics, institutional frameworks, and global political-economic systems.
CRGS also provides minors in Ethnic Studies, Multicultural Queer Studies, and Women's Studies, plus a Women's Studies certificate. Through general education courses and weekend workshops, students gain further opportunities to critically assess systems of inequality and explore resistance strategies.
