The Andrew and Peggy Cherng Department of Medical Engineering provides a doctoral program tailored for engineering students focused on applying micro- and nanoscale innovations to healthcare. This interdisciplinary initiative bridges engineering and medical fields by harnessing Caltech's expertise in fundamental sciences and emerging technologies. The curriculum emphasizes developing cutting-edge medical solutions, with research concentrations in micro/nano medical devices, biomedical materials, bioinspired systems, and diagnostic imaging. Students can pursue either a dedicated Medical Engineering Ph.D. or a dual-track Medical and Electrical Engineering (Med-EE) degree, the latter being a collaborative program with Electrical Engineering. For students graduating after Fall 2022, the Med-EE track results in a single doctoral degree designation: Ph.D. in Medical and Electrical Engineering.
Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree or the equivalent before beginning graduate study.
Applicants whose native language is not English and those who have had no formal instruction in English will be required to take a test to evaluate English proficiency. Please refer to "Required Tests" for a list of the GRE reporting requirements and the English proficiency exams currently accepted. The admissions committee may also consider research papers, publications and other original work.
