Our program guides you in building upon the vibrant heritage of printmaking and book arts, covering techniques like intaglio, lithography, relief, monotype, screenprinting, and photographic printmaking. You'll discover how this medium serves as a canvas for artistic innovation and societal impact. Against the dynamic setting of the San Francisco Bay Area, you'll find inspiration in museums, galleries, experimental art spaces, acclaimed print studios, and community-focused organizations. Before specializing, all undergraduates take part in the First Year Experience, where they experiment with diverse materials and techniques across two semesters. Faculty from various fields lead hands-on projects, collaborative critiques, and conceptual discussions, preparing students for advanced studies in their chosen discipline.
Our students merge cross-disciplinary passions with expertise in both classic and modern printmedia to develop diverse creative approaches. Some launch independent studios and showcase their work in galleries and alternative venues, while others produce activist art or contribute to community learning initiatives. Though their professional journeys vary, they all share a commitment to engaging in meaningful cultural exchange.
