Brown's Master of Arts in Teaching is a 12-month program designed to develop highly skilled secondary educators who excel in their subject area while demonstrating thoughtful reflection and meaningful impact in education.

The MAT curriculum prepares students for teaching careers in grades 7-12 across four disciplines: English, mathematics, social studies, and science (with options in biology, chemistry, or engineering/physics). Combining rigorous university coursework with hands-on classroom experience, our distinctive program specifically equips educators for urban school environments. Participants gain practical teaching skills while cultivating a broader perspective on educational systems and transformation.

No previous teaching experience or education coursework is required, though working with youth is expected. After submitting applications, chosen candidates will interview with faculty, preferably in person, though virtual options are available. Detailed program requirements appear below. Those with questions about academic preparation should consult with faculty in their intended subject area.
