The French and Francophone Studies graduate program offers advanced education in French language, literature, and culture.

Our faculty specialize in diverse areas spanning medieval to contemporary periods across multiple Francophone regions. The curriculum provides instruction in literary theory, critical analysis, digital humanities applications, linguistics, narrative studies, textual interpretation, and sociocultural/psychoanalytic approaches. Research concentrations explore intercultural exchanges within French-speaking communities, gender and racial studies, and intersections between literature, film, and philosophy.

Qualification Requirements

TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test.
IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
Sixteen courses at the 100 and 200 levels (including two mandatory courses: History of the French Language and Theory and Methods of Foreign Language Teaching), departmental tutorials, relevant courses in other departments. Also required: two foreign languages other than French at the intermediate level or one at an advanced level, two semesters of teaching, preliminary examination during third year, dissertation, and oral defense.
