Brown University's Economics Ph.D. program equips students with advanced training in economic theory and analytical methodologies. The curriculum combines rigorous coursework, seminar participation, and guided research to develop expertise in both theoretical and empirical economic research. Typically spanning two years of coursework followed by dissertation work, the program begins with foundational studies in microeconomics (Economics 2050, 2060), macroeconomics (Economics 2070, 2080), econometrics (Economics 2030, 2040), supplemented by mathematics (Economics 2010) and applied economic analysis (Economics 2020). First-year students complete written exams in these core areas before selecting two specialization fields in their second year, each requiring two advanced courses and an oral examination. Students complete seven total advanced courses, including three beyond their chosen fields. Additional requirements include submitting a third-year research paper and delivering two successful seminar presentations. While most students graduate in five years, some complete the program in four.
Graduates of non-U.S. colleges and universities who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree may apply for admission to the Brown University Graduate School.
Regarding TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test. For IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
