Students pursuing Earth, Climate, and Biology studies integrate concepts from geology, biology, chemistry, and physics to examine how Earth's key systems—like its atmosphere and oceans—interact with and support life across different time periods.
Numerous courses focus on climate change, environmental health, and biogeochemistry, making this concentration ideal for environmentally-minded students. Additional study areas explore Earth's evolutionary timeline, covering topics like climatic shifts, mass extinctions, and analyzing sedimentary layers to trace environmental transformations.
The program offers both A.B. and Sc.B. degrees, requiring 12 and 19 courses respectively. These programs develop essential skills including analytical reasoning, data interpretation and modeling, solving multifaceted challenges, and effective communication. DEEPS fosters a teamwork-driven educational setting that prioritizes experiential learning through classroom activities, laboratory work, and field excursions. Students also have ample chances to engage in paid research opportunities during summer breaks or the regular academic term.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
