The Applied Mathematics-Economics program is structured to align with the quantitative foundations of contemporary economic theory and data-driven research. This specialization offers two distinct pathways. The initial pathway focuses on advanced economics, equipping students for postgraduate studies in economics. The alternative pathway emphasizes mathematical finance, preparing students for graduate programs in finance or careers in financial sectors and engineering. Both pathways are available as A.B. or Sc.B. degree options, including a Professional track variant. Core mathematical competencies in Applied Mathematics derive from diverse disciplines relevant to specific problem-solving needs: differential equations (both ordinary and partial), matrix algebra, statistical methods, probability and decision analysis, risk assessment, and actuarial studies, among others. This field attracts individuals with varied aspirations, from those seeking strong quantitative preparation for professional pursuits to those fascinated by the fundamental methodologies themselves. The standard program culminates in either an A.B. or Sc.B. degree.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
