The Department provides a specialized focus in Theatre Arts and Performance Studies. Students select one of three pathways within this concentration - Theatre Arts, Performance Studies, or Writing for Performance. Through collaboration with faculty, undergraduates can tailor their academic journey to align with their interests. Brown's campus serves as a vibrant stage for theatrical, dance, and performance creations, with productions emerging in unconventional spaces like hallways, breezeways, and walkways, alongside traditional theater venues. Some performances are spontaneous improvisations, while others undergo years of careful development. The program balances classic theatrical works with obscure gems and fresh contemporary pieces, ranging from large ensemble productions to solo performances. This dynamic environment fosters a rich dialogue between artistic traditions and bold experimentation, celebrating both established techniques and innovative approaches.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
