The Sociology concentration (resulting in a Bachelor of Arts degree) establishes a grounding in sociological principles and research techniques while allowing students to explore specialized domains within the field. Learners build their expertise through a structured curriculum, encompassing foundational courses in methodology and theory alongside elective options across six key disciplinary strengths: Globalization & Development, Organizations and Economic Sociology, Population Studies, Health and Family Dynamics, Race, Class, Gender and Social Stratification, Environmental Sociology, and Urban Studies. This academic journey culminates in a senior seminar where students hone their focus, completing either a thesis or capstone project that involves data analysis and sociological interpretation of domestic and international social phenomena.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
