Based at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the public policy program focuses on cross-disciplinary and comparative examinations of human societies, emphasizing the principles and standards that shape governance. This program centers on addressing urgent societal challenges while developing, executing, and assessing improved policies and approaches. Dedicated to applying knowledge to enhance opportunities for individuals across varying socioeconomic backgrounds—who often hold conflicting visions of collective welfare—public policy emerges as both a principled and politically charged endeavor, blending artistry with scientific rigor. It functions as a collaborative effort demanding diverse expertise across multiple contexts. Students will explore how societal, economic, and political concerns evolve into policy matters, the processes behind policy formulation and execution, and various methods for analyzing outcomes. Faculty from numerous academic fields contribute to the program, providing students with hands-on learning opportunities locally, nationally, and internationally. Guided by advisors, students craft personalized academic paths combining foundational coursework with electives, internships, independent projects, and a culminating capstone experience.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
