The Modern Culture and Media (MCM) program is an interdisciplinary field examining connections between media and wider cultural and social frameworks. We emphasize both creative thought and critical engagement—combining comparative analysis with theoretical inquiry, alongside projects that blend practical and conceptual approaches. This concentration bridges disciplines typically divided by academic departments, including film studies, visual arts, literature, creative writing, and philosophy. Students can pursue diverse specializations within MCM. One might concentrate on analyzing and creating specific media forms (such as print, photography, audio, film, video, television, or digital platforms), or examine particular cultural, theoretical, or social contexts (like gender/sexuality in post-Cold War TV, postcolonial theory in cinema, evolving novel forms, subjectivity and ideology studies, or representation theories in video games). What unites these paths is a dedication to critical analysis and innovation: instead of simply following established norms, MCM students investigate how conventions develop, their societal functions, and methods for transforming them.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
