Brown's Medieval Studies program features two concentration tracks: Medieval Cultures and Late Antique Cultures. The Medieval Cultures track examines the 6th to 15th centuries, blending cross-disciplinary approaches with specialized study in specific fields. Meanwhile, the Late Antique Cultures track explores the transitional period from the 3rd to 9th centuries, when classical traditions coexisted with emerging medieval forms. The Medieval Cultures concentration particularly emphasizes interdisciplinary methods while allowing students to focus deeply on particular disciplines. While Western European studies remain central, the program actively encourages exploration of other cultural spheres including Byzantine, Islamic, Jewish, and Slavic traditions.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
