Mathematics majors at Brown can delve into these ideas through the department's diverse course selection and adaptable program requirements. The program culminates in either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree (with the BS being highly advised for those considering graduate work in mathematics or similar disciplines). Students start with foundational courses in multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and abstract algebra. After completing these core requirements, learners can choose from numerous upper-level courses (1000 and 2000 level) tailored to their academic interests. An optional thesis project is also available for those who wish to undertake it.
Participants in this program will:
Build fundamental expertise in algebra, geometry, and calculus
Gain specialized knowledge in at least one mathematical discipline, like number theory or harmonic analysis
Master the art of formulating precise mathematical proofs
Cultivate innovative methods for solving quantitative challenges
Create a portfolio of independent research
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
