Our program's main goal is to equip students with proficiency in French while deepening their understanding of how French and Francophone literature and civilizations have shaped human culture throughout history. We strive to help all students appreciate the richness and variety of human expression through language, arts, and intellectual pursuits. The French and Francophone Studies Concentration prepares graduates for diverse career paths including education, translation, international affairs, and diplomacy, while also providing a broad foundation for professions beyond French-related fields. Students can choose from numerous courses covering language skills, historical periods, literary genres, thematic studies, influential authors, cinema, and cultural studies - all designed to explore the French-speaking world's linguistic and cultural dimensions. This flexible structure enables learners to develop language mastery while tailoring their studies to personal strengths, passions, and aspirations. Our French Studies faculty bring expertise spanning Renaissance to contemporary Francophone literature and civilization, including language learning methodologies. Students may pursue independent research in nearly any area of interest, with robust interdisciplinary options available in film, history, arts, and semiotics.
