Brown University's Ethnic Studies program focuses on exploring the historical experiences of various racial communities both within and beyond U.S. boundaries, addressing themes like diaspora, migration, activism, and the economic systems that shape social disparities and racial identity. Students in this program develop expertise in multidisciplinary perspectives on race and ethnicity, culminating in a substantial original research project or creative endeavor. This interdisciplinary concentration offers comparative analysis of how race and ethnicity are shaped within societal, cultural, historical, governmental, and economic frameworks.

International applicants, like all applicants to Brown, are expected to complete secondary school. Brown's first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
