Our program explores the mechanics of literature, its interpretation, and analytical approaches. We focus on linguistic elements, structural forms, literary categories, and analytical techniques. We introduce innovative reading and writing methods that enhance comprehension of English literature and cultures through historical, critical, and theoretical lenses. Our approach highlights literature's transnational nature, tracing the flow of texts and people across boundaries of nationality, ethnicity, gender, and sexual identity throughout history. We motivate students to develop original insights through their literary analysis and composition. Alongside the standard English concentration, we provide a specialized Nonfiction Writing track. Both the English major and Nonfiction Writing option share foundational requirements, with English students able to select Nonfiction courses as electives. Exceptional juniors may apply for honors programs in either English or Nonfiction. All concentration plans require advisor approval.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
