Qualified students may apply to write a thesis by submitting a petition, with faculty selecting the Honors cohort each year from these applications while striving to approve all eligible proposals. The selection process evaluates the application's merit, the student's readiness for the project, and the availability of suitable faculty advisors. Accepted Honors students enroll in REMS 1980 (changing to EMOW 1980 starting Fall 2019) during both Fall and Spring semesters under their advisor's section number. Throughout the academic year, participants must maintain regular meetings with their advisors and second readers, following schedules they establish together. Completed thesis drafts (approximately 35 pages excluding bibliography and supplementary materials) are due to advisors and second readers by April 1 of the Spring term. After receiving feedback, students incorporate final revisions. Honors designation requires written endorsements from both the primary advisor and second reader for the completed project. The final paper—a refined, professionally edited original research work—will be shared with all Early Modern World faculty for review. A public presentation of Honors projects concludes the Spring semester.
