Development Studies is an interdisciplinary program aimed at equipping students with the understanding, analytical frameworks, and practical abilities necessary to address economic and social development challenges, particularly in the Global South. Rooted in social sciences like anthropology, sociology, political science, and economics, the program also incorporates insights from history, arts, and other humanities fields. Its curriculum is structured around three key objectives: establishing a strong foundation in development theories, enabling students to specialize in a region of their choice, and offering diverse course options across multiple disciplines. Students are encouraged to conduct independent field research. In their final year, they undertake a customized capstone project focused on international development, supported by faculty mentorship and peer collaboration.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
