Embracing Brown University's New Curriculum philosophy, the Comparative Literature concentration offers significant academic flexibility. While the following requirements provide structure and depth to the major, they permit higher-level courses from any literature department at Brown to fulfill concentration credits. Students may also count relevant courses from related fields toward their Comparative Literature studies. Importantly, concentrators aren't restricted to Comparative Literature department offerings, though we strongly recommend our courses for their cross-cultural approach. Complete prerequisites for 1000-level courses in both languages before Semester V (students studying non-European languages may have more flexibility - consult a concentration advisor to develop a personalized plan). Required courses include: Comparative Literature 1210 (Introduction to Literary Theory), Comparative Literature 1710 (with strong recommendation for 2720), and one linguistics course from options like Cognitive Science 0410, Anthropology 0800, English 1210, or Hispanic Studies 1210. The program requires five to six advanced literature courses (typically 1000-level), including at least two courses in each language's literature, with remaining courses primarily from Comparative Literature, English, and other national literature departments. Most courses should be taught in the original language.
