The AB in Biology consists of 14 courses, allowing students to investigate diverse academic interests both within and beyond the discipline. Foundational math and chemistry prerequisites underpin a central curriculum of 10 biology (and neuroscience) classes, with flexibility to include related science electives. The core curriculum mandates distribution requirements to ensure broad biological knowledge, alongside laboratory and upper-level course obligations. While research isn't compulsory for AB Biology students, many engage in faculty-led research opportunities during semesters, summers, or full academic years, both on campus and elsewhere. The program requires courses to be graded ABC/NC for concentration credit. Special circumstances may warrant discussing the S/NC grading option with a concentration advisor, though students must obtain advisor approval before selecting S/NC for any concentration course (mandatory S/NC courses are exempt from this restriction).
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
