Astronomy stands alongside Greek, Latin, and Mathematics as one of Brown University's longest-running academic disciplines. This field explores celestial objects like stars and galaxies while bridging concepts from Physics and Planetary Geology. Concentration students begin with foundational studies in classical mechanics, relativity, astrophysics, mathematics, and electromagnetism before advancing to specialized courses in stellar phenomena, extragalactic systems, and cosmic evolution. The program provides access to research facilities including the renowned Ladd Observatory.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
