The undergraduate program in Archaeology and the Ancient World offers students a chance to delve into the diverse field of archaeology while promoting interdisciplinary exploration of ancient civilizations. While centered on the archaeology and art of the Mediterranean, Egypt, and Near East, Brown University's program motivates students to expand their studies by connecting with other disciplines like history, epigraphy, engineering, religious studies, and the sciences. The concentration features three interconnected tracks, giving students the freedom to customize their academic journey. All tracks share a common foundation before branching into specialized areas such as cultural heritage, archaeological methods, or specific historical periods. The curriculum is structured to facilitate progressive learning, from introductory classes to advanced seminars. Students are encouraged to include courses that examine social inequality, diversity, and community engagement, both through Diverse Perspectives in Liberal Learning (DPLL) courses and related non-DPLL offerings. Hands-on research experiences—including fieldwork, museum work, internships, or independent studies—are highly recommended.
