The American Studies concentration explores how American societies and cultures develop through historical and modern influences across local, national, and worldwide settings. Students examine four key areas: identity formation within social structures, concepts of space and location, cultural creation and reception, and the interplay between technology, science, and daily experiences. Built on connecting academic work with public discourse, the program includes junior seminars focused on public humanities topics like policy-making, memorial practices, community research, or civic participation. International study opportunities are both available and recommended. Prospective students can reach out to the undergraduate studies director for more information.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
