The Master of Science in marriage and family therapy is a two-year graduate program designed to equip students with professional skills in three key areas: (1) theoretical knowledge, (2) clinical practice, and (3) research proficiency, all while emphasizing multicultural awareness. Upon completion, graduates will (1) qualify to take the AMFTRB National Licensing Exam, (2) possess the clinical skills needed for internship positions, and (3) meet Utah's educational and training standards for associate MFT licensure. The program trains students for diverse professional settings in marriage and family therapy, with a curriculum aligned with state licensing standards and accredited by the AAMFT Commission on Accreditation. This master's degree serves as the foundational qualification for independent MFT practice and provides preparation for doctoral studies. Students pursuing both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at BYU must first complete the master's program before applying to the doctoral program.
