Psychology has long been a cornerstone of liberal arts education, deeply embedded in Western intellectual heritage. Emerging in the late 1800s, the field established itself as a scientific discipline with diverse areas of focus. While some psychologists specialize in treating various mental health conditions, others dedicate their work to addressing societal challenges. A global network of academic and practicing psychologists continuously enhances our knowledge of individual and group behavior, applying these insights to better humanity.

Career Paths - A psychology degree opens doors to professional opportunities and advanced studies in the field. Psychologists fulfill numerous roles including educators, investigators, and administrators, while also offering therapeutic, diagnostic, and advisory services to people and institutions. They find employment across educational settings, healthcare facilities, private practices, corporations, and government agencies. Psychological knowledge proves especially valuable for family dynamics and community engagement. The major cultivates insightful perspectives on human and organizational conduct, preparing students for careers in law enforcement, legal professions, or commerce. While graduate degrees are typically necessary for professional roles, bachelor's graduates can secure positions in mental health services, correctional systems, social work support, or human resources. Additionally, psychology provides excellent preparation for graduate programs in business, law, or medical fields.

At minimum, 36 major credits must be at the 300-level or higher. (500-level courses are available when space permits.)
The Psychology Department mandates that students complete at least 23 psychology credits at BYU for this degree, which may also count toward the university's 30-credit graduation residency requirement.
