The School of Family Life mandates that students complete at least 18 credit hours of upper-level major courses on campus at BYU for this degree. (This includes a minimum of 12 credit hours from the human development core taken at BYU.) These credits may also count toward BYU's 30-credit residency requirement for graduation.

The Human Development program offers two specialization paths: Human Development and Biological Foundations. The Biological Foundations track prepares students for careers in healthcare and medical fields.
